Northamptonshire’s to share in more government spending on improving the buses.

A further £25 million will go towards electric zero emission vehicles in our region, with over £9 million of that and around 50 buses in the West Northamptonshire area.

25 councils in all across England are to receive funding for cleaner, more modern and more reliable bus fleets, with rural areas prioritised.

The funding is part of the £143 million investment from the second round of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) programme.

Today’s announcement comes on top of over £126 million to improve bus services in the East Midlands from the Department of Transport’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said:

“As part of our plan to improve local transport in the East Midlands, we’re providing over £25 million to roll out 177 brand new zero-emission buses across the region.

“This latest investment into our bus fleet comes on top of our £3.5 billion we have invested into our bus network since 2020, protecting and improving bus routes into 2025 as well as extending the £2 bus fare cap until the end of 2024, made possible by reallocated HS2 funding.”
