A police watchdog investigating claims that Northamptonshire police chief, Nick Adderley, had misrepresented his military service is now sending their evidence to the Crime Prosecution Service (CPS).

The top policeman was suspended from the force in October last year after allegations were made surrounding him wearing a Falklands war medal, despite him only being 15 at the time. In a statement last year, he claimed the veterans medal was his brother’s.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) began its investigation into gross misconduct and recommended Adderley face a disciplinary hearing.

The independent policing watchdog has since completed their criminal investigation into the allegations and concluded that “a criminal offence may have been committed”. They clarified that their indication is not a judgement and that any criminal charges would have to be brought from the CPS.

IOPC Regional Director Emily Barry said: “Following careful investigation, we have now submitted an evidential report to the Crown Prosecution Service. It will be for the CPS to consider whether to bring any criminal charge.

“A referral to the CPS is made when the IOPC investigation indicates that a criminal offence may have been committed. It does not mean that criminal charges will necessarily follow. The CPS will decide whether charges should be brought, based on the test set out in the Code for Crown Prosecutors.”

Mr Adderley's misconduct hearing was postponed at the end of February. Its chairman said it was because insufficient time had been allocated to properly hear the case.

The hearing now begins today (May 28th) and will take place over a period of three days at the Northampton Saints ground Franklin Gardens. Members of the public were invited to apply to attend by Northamptonshire Police. Ivan Balhatchet is currently the acting Northamptonshire chief constable whilst Adderley remains suspended under investigation.
