Man charged with affray after Northampton protest

It follows gatherings in the town on Wednesday (August 7th)

A 19-year-old man has today (Friday, August 9) appeared before Northampton Magistrates’ Court charged with affray following an incident on Wednesday (August 7).

Amjad Ali was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and affray following an isolated incident during the protests in Kettering Road, Northampton, shortly after 7pm.

Ali, of Alcombe Road, Northampton, was subsequently charged with one count of affray. No further action was taken in relation to the alleged assault.

At the hearing, magistrates committed the case to Northampton Crown Court and Ali was remanded in custody until Monday (August 12), when he will appear before the crown court judge.

Two other people – a man and woman from Northampton - were also arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with the same incident.

A 34-year-old man has been released on police bail pending further enquiries, while a 34-year-old woman has been released without charge.
