A festival to commemorate the work of Academy-Award winning composer Sir Malcolm Arnold is underway today, in his hometown of Northampton.

The 19th edition of the Malcolm Arnold festival sees his live concerts streamed online across the day, at no cost.

Organisers of the festival say they want to continue his legacy of being "accessible".

Arnold, who died in 2006 aged 84, won the Academy Award for his score for the 1957-film_The Bridge on the River Kwai-_about British prisoners of war captured by the Japanese.

Arnold wrote more than 100 film scores, nine symphonies, concertos, and conducted Deep Purple's live album Concerto for Group and Orchestra.

He was born and lived most of his life in Northampton, and later moved to Norfolk.
