Kettering Town can claim county bragging rights, as they saw off Northampton Town 2-1 in the first round of the FA Cup proper.

The Poppies- who find themselves four divisions below the Cobblers- needed extra time to grab a winner.

They sit top of their Southern League Premier Division Central, while Northampton are 18th in League One.

It's the first time the two Northamptonshire-based sides played each other since 1989... 35 years ago!

Northampton manager Jon Brady- who played for Kettering in 2007/08- said: “There are no qualms and no excuses, Kettering fully deserved this result.

“We started quite brightly and I felt we had a goal wrongly disallowed when it was onside but I can’t take anything away from Kettering.

“Injuries are hurting us and we are missing the frontmen who make a difference- we are creaking as a squad and its hugely frustrating.

“In my time in charge we’ haven’t had too many nights like this but this is a really bad night for us.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Kettering because they fully deserved this result but we need to look at where we can be better.

“We’ve got another game coming up on Tuesday and I need to put out a team that is fit enough to play the ninety minutes.”

Kettering Town will see who they'll play in the second round tonight at 7:45pm- they're ball number 24.
