A West Northamptonshire Councillor say the reports will mean they can approach Defra for more flood prevention funding.

West Northamptonshire Council are telling us they are looking to improve flood defences for the future.

It comes after the country was covered by a series of weather warnings last week - with some parts affected by heavy flooding.

Last week we seen torrential rain hit across the county, which left 52 people from Billing Aquadrome in emergency accommodation.

Councillor Pinder Chauhan is the Assistant Cabinet Member for Flooding at West Northamptonshire Council and tells us they want to be prepared for the future:

"I 100% recognise that weather patterns are changing, weather is getting more extreme. We need to makes sure that we are future proofing Northamptonshire and our country and making sure we have communities that are fit for the future and that feel protected."

She says it's been distressing hearing issues that residents have faced across the county. But she adds that people should reach out to let the council know about flooding issues, so that more funding for protection can be called for from Defra and the government;

"It helps us as a local authority to build a business case, and that business case allows us to then take the evidence to Defra, and to the Environment Agency to say look this is a serious issue in our area and we need to attract more funding."

Pinder Chauhan says she recognises fixing flood issues like Billing Aquadrome, which has flooded three times this year, will take millions to flood proof:

"We need government money from Defra, they need to be raised above water level and that is going to cost a lot of money."

Although wet weather is predicted for today, and flood alerts are decreasing, though the water is falling on already heavily sodden ground across the county.
