The family of a teenager who drowned after getting into difficulty swimming in the River Nene want people to sign up for water safety sessions in his memory.

1\7 year old Ronalds Abele lost his life in Wellingborough back in May. His parents tell us they don't want any more families to go through the same kind of loss.

Today Saturday 1 March sees the fourth course that's been set up taking place at Wellingborough Leisure Centre.

The teenagers mother Laura Kirsteine says she thought she was aware of water safety issues herself, but the course made her realise there was must more she needed to learn about safety whilst swimming.

She says it's so important that people learn what to do:

"I went in thinking I know a lot, but I probably knew about 5% of everything they talked about. And I think it would be great if it was actually done in schools, starting with junior school, senior schools and colleges, of course we have all of them in Wellingborough."

Ronalds father Thomas Fosu hopes other towns may follow their lead with the course:

"It's very very important for us to get this water safety course going. It's something that we want to keep carrying on."

They are concerned that they need to secure funding for the courses going forward.

Here's Ronald's mother Laura:

"It would mean a lot if the council could help with the costs of these courses. We as grieving parents shouldn't have to be fighting for the the funding."

North Northamptonshire Council have been contacted for comment.
