A woman has been arrested as part of an investigation into allegations of non-recent sexual abuse at a Northamptonshire school.

The 67-year-old from Stafford was detained on Tuesday by officers investigating incidents that it is claimed took place at Maidwell Hall School in the 1970s.

She has been released on conditional bail as enquiries continue.

An official investigation was launched by Northamptonshire Police on Monday, after "preliminary enquiries" following allegations made in a book by the younger brother of Princess Diana.

Charles Spencer attended Maidwell Hall as an eight-year-old boy in the 1970s.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police say their investigation remains in the "early stages."

"Northamptonshire Police takes all allegations of abuse very seriously and where reports are made to us, we will pursue all available lines of enquiry to help bring perpetrators to justice.

"We encourage anyone who has suffered abuse anywhere in our county, at any time, to contact us either online at northants.police.uk, by calling 101 or 03000 111 222 if you’re calling from outside of Northamptonshire."
