One in five North East women say they would put a career before a family.

Figures released today claim more than half of 18 to 24-year-olds here also don't know if they are able to have children

Francesca Dickinson is 26 and works in Newcastle.

She said despite previous generations having children young, it's just not something she thinks about.

"I'm just working at the minute and I guess if the opportunity presents itself, I might change my mind," she said.

"My mum was really young when she had me and my brothers, I think she was like 21 or 22. I was just brought up in a way to always enjoy yourself really.

"When it comes to having a family there's other ways, you know adoption and things like that, just stay healthy, that's it."

The figures by Harley Street Fertility Clinic say there is often misconceptions associated with fertility in women over 30 and lots of confusion surrounding the topic.

They claim nationally over a third of women do not know if they can have children.
