The Met Office are warning people across the North East to prepare for a weekend of high winds and frosty conditions.

They are urging people to stay safe and keep up to date with the latest weather updates.

Storm Bert is expected to hit the UK from today and cause disruptions across the region.

Jonathan Vautrey, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "This deep area of low pressure will be bringing strong winds for some, heavy rainfall in other areas, but also because it is pushing into some very cold air ahead of it that we have with us right at the moment. It's going to be producing some snowfall as well. So, this really is a multi-hazard event.

"There is the potential of some snow initially first thing as storm Bert passes across northeastern parts of England. This, though, will quickly turn to rain as we see milder air sweep in behind it.

"There are some really quite strong gusts of wind around which could lead to further disruption for anyone that that is travelling. Some trees are also still not fully shedding their leaves and that has the potential to knock those trees down as well.

"Do take care when you are travelling and ensure that you are up to date with the latest forecast across the Met Office, social media channels and the app so that you are aware of where that heavy rain is pushing through and what potential diversion routes you may need to be taking over the course of the weekend."
