Published 30th Jun 2016

Police are warning people of the dangers of taking drugs not prescribed to them after medication was stolen in Cramlington.

It happened at 10.45am yesterday (Wednesday, June 29), at the Sainsbury's store in Manor Walks.

A 36-year-old woman had collected prescribed drugs and left them in an unattended shopping trolley outside the chemist's consulting room. When she returned a short time later a quantity of medication had been stolen.

The items, all in tablet form, are:

Diazepam 28 x 10mg Fluoxetine 60 x 20 mg Lansoprazole 56 x 15mg Nabumetone 112 x 500mg Paracetamol 64 x 500mg and Propranolol 56 x 80mg.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the theft and warning against the dangers of taking medication not prescribed to them.

Neighbourhood Inspector Grant Dawson said: "Any concoction of medication is potentially extremely dangerous, and it's equally dangerous for people to take medication which has not been prescribed to them.

"I'd warn those responsible or anyone who finds the drugs not to consume any of it, and would urge people not to purchase or accept medication which is not specifically prescribed to them.

"Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the stolen drugs should contact us as soon as possible or if they find them hand them in to police, a doctor's surgery or pharmacy.

"Anyone who witnessed the theft from the supermarket trolley or knows who is responsible should also get in touch."

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting reference number 414 of 29/06/16 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
