It was rumoured that he was linked with the Magpies

Villareal manager Unai Emery will turn down the Newcastle manager job, reports Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

Emery confirmed on Tuesday that he had been approached by the Magpies, making him their first choice manager following Steve Bruce's departure.

Newcastle had hoped to have the Spaniard in place by the weekend.

It has been reported that the reason why the former Arsenal manager will turn down the role is because there is 'not a clear vision from the club.'

Balague tweeted: 'If you want Unai, do you approach it in such a rushed way, without an official offer and leaking that is all practically done?

'I don't see this move for Emery happening this season... Maybe next campaign when the structure is clearer and the vision more refined/defined.'

Balague says that with ex-former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe being linked as another option for the club, a mixed message of the clubs vision was spelt out to Emery and those advising the Villarreal manager.

Both managers deliver two contrasting approaches to football, with one having extensively greater levels of experience within European football.

Emery is fresh off 2-0 victory against Young Boys in the Champions League last night, as well as a Europa League win against Manchester United with his Villarreal side, after beating them 11-10 on penalties last summer.

Although a bad start has meant his Spanish side currently sit 13th in La Liga, Balague reports that this 'changes nothing'.

Balague reports the Newcastle has previously made approaches for new Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, Barcelona legend Xavi and ex-Germany manager Joachim Low but all have turned the opportunity down.

Newcastle are currently sitting 19th in the league, with the magpies still yet to win a game this season, and have been without a manager for going on to three weeks.

They travel to Brighton on Saturday evening with the need for a permanent manager more pressing by the day.
