A North East team of volunteers, who make up a local coastal search and rescue service, say 2025 is set to be their busiest yet.
Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade attended 21 incidents last month, surpassing the previous high of 19 in September 2020.
So far this year they have responded to 170 calls, and are now 20 above their previous highest for a full year of 150.
They say last month (September) included several challenging calls, including:
- An eight-hour tasking over the night of 10th/11th September after a yacht grounded on rocks at King Edward’s Bay
- Two water rescues in two hours on 27th September as weather and sea conditions contributed to dangerous rip currents at King Edward’s Bay
During the month, the team also carried out a weekend of bucket collections in Tynemouth, had over 25 runners raise money for them by participating in the Great North Run, and welcomed over 100 visitors to their Watch House Museum as part of the national Heritage Open Days.
