Two men have been arrested by Northumbria Police investigating two separate disturbances in the village of Chopwell, near Gateshead.

They were called to Tweed Street around 11.30am on Saturday (9th May) to reports of a man having been assaulted.

It came after earlier incidents at Tees Street and Thames Street involving a group of men.

Nobody was seriously hurt.

The men arrested are a 28 year old who's been released under investigation and a 27 year old who's still being questioned.

Northumbria Police's Tam Fowler said, "This was clearly a very serious and violent altercation between a group of men which unfolded in broad daylight with many onlookers around.

"This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and an investigation has been launched to find out the circumstances behind the altercation.

"We do not see this as a random attack and believe all parties involved were known to each other.

"I am now appealing for anyone who has any information, or who witnessed what happened, to get in touch – your information might be vital.”
