Thousands protest against Blue House roundabout plans

Thousands protest against £20m plans to expand a roundabout at Newcastle's Town Moor, **claiming it could 'destroy' the area.**

Harriet Johnston, who lives just five minutes away from where the construction would take place, was among campaigners calling for the plans to upgrade the Blue House roundabout to be scrapped.

Enlarging the roundabout would involve laying road on two surrounding moors.

Harriet said: "I think the whole thing is a bit of a joke to be honest.

"I don't know anyone who thinks it's a good idea.

"Every resident that I've spoken to is devastated to think about our local green area being destroyed."

Stephen Powers from Newcastle City Council said something must be done to improve one of the worst accident blackspots in the area.

"It is one of the worst for car collisions in the city and it is the worst for cycle accidents," he said.

"Residents agree with us that something needs to be done but they've made it very clear so far that something of this scale is perhaps not what they want to be seeing.

"We will continue to refine the plans according to those views."
