Thousands of dogs have been picked up across the North East this year after being abandoned.

The figures come from the annual Stray Dog Survey released today.

In the North East 7,457 stray dogs were picked up in 2015 – which is 25% less than in 2014.

The survey claims of these stray dogs, 4,444 were reunited with their owners but 3,013 of them were left unclaimed.

The charity say that abandoning a dog is simply unacceptable and that the prevalence of dog abandonment adds a huge amount of pressure on animal welfare charities and local authorities.

Across the UK more than 5 dogs are abandoned every hour.
