Northumbria Police say they've arrested two teenagers after reports bricks and stones were thrown onto the motorway.

Shortly after 7.55pm on Wednesday, a distressed motorist rang the force saying he'd been hit on the head with a brick while driving.

The 52-year-old reported that he had been travelling on the A1 near Blakelaw when a number of young people on a footbridge threw a brick at his car, which went through the sunroof, and struck him on the head.

Suffering a cut to the head, he pulled over the car and watched as the teens then ran across four lanes of oncoming traffic to flee the scene, causing a number of vehicles to brake.

An investigation was immediately launched.

Following a number of enquiries two boys aged 14 were arrested on suspicion of causing danger to road users. They have since been released under investigation.

A spokesperson for the police said:

"This sort of behaviour is completely unacceptable and reckless and puts road users at risk. In this case, one man had sustained a nasty head injury and we are thankful nothing more serious occurred. We would ask anyone who saw what happened or has information to get in touch quoting crime reference 049156R/22."
