Teenager arrested following a suspected arson in Birtley

The 19-year-old man has been arrested as police continue CCTV enquiries

Officers investigating a suspected arson in Birtley are appealing to the public for information.

Shortly before 11pm last night (Monday), police were called to support Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service who were tackling a fire at Shee Recycling on Durham Road.

Fire fighters are still working at the scene to fully extinguish the fire however, the blaze is now under control.

For safety, the public in the area are asked to keep their windows and doors closed due to the large plumes of smoke.

Thankfully nobody was injured but a full investigation has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Today, after following various lines of enquiry, police have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of arson.

However, officers are also keen to trace another man who was believed to be at the scene shortly before the fire and may be able to assist with enquiries.
