17 year old girl dies after collision on A19 near Sunderland
Police are investigating, after a teenage girl died, and a teenage boy was left with serious injuries in a collision on the A19
Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a teenage girl died and another teen was left with serious injuries following a road traffic collision.
Just after 11pm yesterday, police received a report of a collision involving a yellow Vauxhall Corsa on the A19 northbound, between the B1404 at Seaham and the A690 Herrington Interchange, in Sunderland.
It was reported that, for reasons yet to be established, the Corsa has left the carriageway and then been involved in a collision.
The vehicle is then reported to have caught fire.
Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished a short time later.
The male driver of the Corsa and his female passenger were found to have sustained serious injuries in the collision.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, the girl, aged 17, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
The driver, aged 19, was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries where he remains in a critical condition. His next of kin have been made aware.
A section of was closed in both directions to allow officers to carry out enquiries, with a stretch of the northbound carriageway closed for a longer period. The road has since fully re-opened to traffic.
Officers are now calling on any witnesses to the collision to contact them.
Sergeant John Sanderson, of Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU), said: “Firstly, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the teenager who has tragically passed away.
“We will offer them all of the support we can.
“A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is underway and a number of enquiries have already been carried out.
“I would ask anyone with information regarding what took place – particularly those with dash cam footage of the moments leading up to the collision – to contact us so that we can get a complete picture of last night’s incident.”
