Suspect charged with the attempted murder of a man in Newcastle
The victim was taken to hospital after being shot in Byker on Wednesday
A man's been charged with attempted murder in Newcastle.
At around 1.50pm on Wednesday (16th October), police received a report of a disturbance in the Headlam Green area of Byker.
Emergency services rushed to the scene where they found a man with injuries consistent with having been caused by a firearm.
The man – who is in his 40s – was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening.
Officers say he remains in hospital.
Following the incident, a full investigation was immediately launched by Northumbria Police.
A man was subsequently arrested in connection with the report.
The man – 50-year-old Stephen Thompson – has now been charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of a bladed article and having a corrosive substance in a public place.
He is due to appear before magistrates sitting in Newcastle today (19th October).
A 21-year-old man also arrested in connection with the report has since been released and will face no further action.
Officers remain in the Headlam Green area to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to the public.
