Sunderland legends The Futureheads to join Kaiser Chiefs at Lamplight Festival
Sunderland City Council has today confirmed that Sunderland rock 'n' roll indie icons The Futureheads will join Kaiser Chiefs on Saturday 6th August at the first ever Lamplight Festival on Mowbray Park.
This follows that Jack Savoretti (Friday 5th August) and Deacon Blue (Sunday 7th August) will all perform at the recently re-arranged event taking place in the heart of the city this Summer alongside the likes of Zuzu, rising Wearside star Faye Fantarrow, Tide Lines and Roddy Woomble, formerly the frontman of the band Idlewild.
The council has also announced that it will host its first fringe festival across the weekend in August in celebration of the North East's burgeoning live music scene and will also feature a variety of family-friendly activities.
Mowbray Park's famous bandstand will host some of the region's most promising musical artists.
Speaking ahead of today's announcement, Ross Millard of the Futureheads, said:
“As a proud Sunderland band we’re excited to be performing at Lamplight Festival this summer. It’s great to see live music back in Mowbray Park - it’s a pretty special setting for an inner-city festival! We’re looking forward to seeing the other bands on the bill and we’re really keen to support this debut event in our hometown.”
Having first emerged at the start of the '00s amidst a burgeoning swarm of guitar bands, the Sunderland quartet, The Futureheads, with their proud regional accents and spiky, playful sensibilities, stuck out from the off.
Over the following decade The Futureheads – comprised of vocalists and guitarists Barry Hyde and Ross Millard, vocalist and bassist David 'Jaff' Craig and vocalist and drummer Dave Hyde – amassed five critically-acclaimed albums, headlined countless tours and earned an NME Single of the Year accolade for their iconic cover of Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love.'
Returning with ‘Powers’, their sixth studio album and their first electric guitar release in almost a decade, the band’s aim is one of forward motion not nostalgia; though the quartet could probably rely on the successes of old to push them through the next couple of festival seasons, that isn't – and hasn't ever – been the point.
