A Sunderland career criminal who broke into two homes and stole the victims' cars has been jailed.

51 year old Steven Spencer, of Front Street, also stole cash, bank cards and jewellery during a spree of thefts in June and July.

He pleaded guilty to a string of offences at Newcastle Crown Court on Friday (October 1). He has 18 previous convictions for burglary.

The court heard how Spencer targeted a house in Sunderland on June 29, breaking in while the owner was still inside to steal car cars and a wallet.

Two days later he broke into another house in the city but fled after being caught by the homeowner.

He was caught on July 19 when he stole jewellery, ornaments, a mobile phone and a Jeep which he later crashed into a tree.

He was detained by bystanders while they waited for police to arrive.

He's been jailed for three years and nine months - he has 18 previous convictions for similar offences.

Detective Sergeant Chris Raper-Smith, of Northumbria Police, said: “Steven Spencer is a career criminal who has shown a constant disregard for the law and the livelihood of others.

“He has routinely targeted his own community for purely selfish gains – causing misery to his victims along the way. Quite simply, he deserves to be behind bars.

“I would like to thank the victims in each case who played their part in ensuring Spencer had his day in court.

"I hope this positive outcome offers reassurance not only to them, but the wider community."
