Police are appealing for information after an elderly woman was injured by an air weapon in South Tyneside.

The incident happened around 8.40am yesterday (Sunday, April 10) in Erskine Road in South Shields.

The woman suffered a head injury as a result of the incident and was taken to hospital for medical attention.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around the incident and officers are keen for any witnesses to come forward.

It's not known where the weapon was fired from.

Chief Inspector Neil Robson said:

"The woman has suffered a facial injury as a result in this incident and is currently in hospital. Enquiries are ongoing to establish where the weapon was fired from and trace the person responsible and we want anyone who may have information to come forward."
