A Skateboarding competition is being held in memory a Newcastle teenager, killed in a car accident.

Shane Sloan was 18 when he was involved in the incident in 2011, As he was going round a bend on the Mount Pleasant slip road, he got a puncture in his tyre due to a screw, and hit a lamppost.

He was taken to RVI and spent several days in Intensive care, but sadly never regained consciousness, and died on the 18th May.

Caron Heatherington, Shane’s mum, says “Shane loved his skateboard and his bike, and so we felt a skateboarding competition would be the perfect tribute”

Whilst the speed limit along the road was 60mph, the Police found that Shane had been travelling at between 30-35mph. After campaigning and setting up a petition, the family got the speed limit permanently changed to 30mph

Shane had just finished 3 years at college, passing level 1 2 3 in motor vehicle technology, and had just started working with his step-dad’s garage.

The event will be held at Override Skate Park in Jarrow on Saturday 20th August at 12:30. His family organise the event annually – this is the 6th time they’ve held the competition.

It is free entry for all ages, and has various prizes, detailed on their Facebook event
