Ahead of the Blaydon races on Friday evening, we're being warned travel delays and traffic congestion is expected between Newcastle and Blaydon due to increased road closures.

After meeting with Northumbria Police, Newcastle Council and Gateshead Council; Blaydon Race Organisers agreed to increase the number of road closures to stage the annual running of the Blaydon Race on Friday 9th June.

Following recent attacks in the UK, general safety and security measures were reviewed for one of the region’s most popular running events and subsequently, additional measures have been put in place.

Scotswood Road, Scotswood Bridge and Chainbridge Road will be fully closed to traffic between 6.00pm and 9.30pm on Friday evening.

There will be congestion in Newcastle City Centre, Blaydon and other roads in and out of the City with potential delays and diversions for drivers.

Drivers are advised to avoid the affected areas if possible and allow additional time for any necessary journeys that they do need to take at this time.

As well as the changes to the traffic management of the race there will also be a significant increase in Police and Event Security Personnel in attendance at the event to ensure the safe running of the 37th Blaydon Race.

The Event Organisers, Newcastle Council and Gateshead Council have apologised for any inconvenience and would like to thank everyone for their patience and co-operation during the running of the race.
