The space where the Odeon once was...
Newcastle City Council have released a statement.
“Contractors have cleared the debris overnight and Pilgrim Street is open to traffic in both directions though the footpath nearest to the Odeon site is closed to pedestrians. “The façade of the building, which was scaffolded, collapsed at about 11.30pm last night and police closed the road. Thankfully no one was injured.
“The Health and Safety Executive are on site and are investigating the cause of the collapse. Our engineers and surveyors are liaising with the contractor and the HSE to provide support.”
Cabinet Member for Investment and Development, Cllr Ged Bell, said:
“I am very concerned about the collapse of the Odeon’s façade last night. The safety of the public is paramount - thank goodness no one was injured.
“The demolition was being carried out on behalf of a developer. While the council must be notified of a demolition it is not responsible for it.
“The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the collapse, and like everyone else, we await with interest their findings to find out what happened to avoid this kind of thing happening again.
“In the meantime, council surveyors and engineers are liaising with the contractor and Health and Safety Executive to provide ongoing support . ”
