The Rugby World Cup Is Almost Here!
Following two years of planning and preparation, the Rugby World Cup finally arrives in Newcastle.
Tens of thousands of rugby fans are expected in the city as we welcome the world to Newcastle in true Geordie style, with St James’ Park hosting South Africa against Scotland on Saturday 3 October, kick off 4.45pm. Many more are expected to visit the Official Rugby World Cup Fanzone as well as bars and eateries across the city to experience the big match atmosphere. The Fanzone on Science Central is ideally placed next to the stadium, with a 60 square metre big screen showing all the matches, and an action-packed programme of events and entertainment for all the family, including a fun fair. Open from 10.00am through to 11.30pm, the fun kicks off at 12noon with pitch up and play sessions in the purpose built mini stadium, giving everyone a chance to have a go with an egg shaped ball. Across the city there will be street theatre and music on routes leading up to the stadium, celebrating the musical traditions of South Africa and Scotland, welcoming fans and visitors to Newcastle. And Big Rory will lead a procession up to the Fanzone for a mass ceilidh with a South African twist at 3.30pm. Nick Forbes, Leader of Newcastle City Council said:
“These Rugby World Cup games are just part of our ambition to put on major sporting and cultural events which will showcase the city all around the world. Excitement is mounting about the forthcoming rugby matches at St James’ Park, which will be some of the most enjoyable of the whole tournament. The atmosphere is already incredible as we welcome thousands of fans from around the world and give them our famous warm Geordie welcome. The next two weekends should make everyone in the city immensely proud for what we can achieve together."
