More than 11,000 people have signed a river safety petition, following the disappearance of a Durham University student.

19-year-old Euan Coulthard was last seen on CCTV crossing Framwellgate Bridge in the early hours of Thursday 15th January.

He is the third student to go missing in 14 months in the city, following the deaths of Sope Peters and Luke Pearce.

Now, Durham County Council say they will review safety measures.

Adrian White – head of transport and contract services said: “Our thoughts are very much with Mr Coulthard’ s family and friends at what is a really worrying time. We will continue to work with our partners at Durham Constabulary and the university to do everything we can to support public safety in the city. This will include an assessment of river bank safety in liaison with the other landowners involved.

“We also support the safety messages highlighted by the police and the university regarding planning a safe journey home and not walking home alone.”
