There is a warning to the North East after figures show Police have seen a rise in reports of people using naked photos and videos for revenge.

It's after an investigation involving 14 forces, including Northumbria Police.

Forces have seen a marked rise in allegations since the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) issued new guidelines on dealing with so called 'revenge porn' back in October.

Detective Chief Inspector Lisa Orchard from Northumbria Police told Metro Radio "There's various different cases, in Northumbria Police we've seen six incidents reported between January and April. A lot of them, and a lot of them nationally are in relation to partners. Often it's domestic violence related, and its controlling behaviour by one of the partners."

Latest details gathered from police forces in England and Wales show the majority of criminal allegations featuring revenge porn involved victims aged under 30, with eight female complainants for every one male, while the overwhelming number of cases involved former partners.

Professor Clare McGlynn from Durham University tells Metro Radio she's not surprised by the increase.

She says "Revenge pornography is probably on the increase, we don't really know statistics for definite but it's certainly a growing phenomenon. People are now more aware that there is a law against revenge pornography so they are not suffering in silence."

The cases involve sharing explicit or sexual images without the subject's consent, and has been brought into sharp focus following a series of high-profile cases including pop stars Rihanna and Tulisa Contostavlos.
