Redheugh Bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead closed on Sunday
Gateshead council's reminding drivers that the Redheugh bridge over the River Tyne will be closed to all traffic on Sunday
Gateshead council's reminding drivers that the Redheugh bridge over the River Tyne will be closed to all traffic on Sunday 10th August, between 6am and 6pm.
The closure is needed to allow for the first phase of the bridge’s principal inspection, which is a very thorough survey of the structure.
During the closure the council will also be taking the opportunity to carry out further essential works to repair a damaged section of the bridge parapet system, as well as cleaning the bridge drainage system to ensure this is working adequately ahead of the autumn and winter months.
A signed diversion route will be in place which will divert all vehicular traffic via the A167 Tyne Bridge. Drivers can also use other river crossings upstream – either the A695 Scotswood Bridge or A1.
Further restrictions may be required either on the bridge deck or to the surrounding highway network to ensure the engineers can access and inspect all areas of the structure.
Council officers have coordinated with Newcastle City Council to ensure the closure of the Redheugh Bridge does not coincide with other planned road closures or major events to ensure there is minimal disruption to the travelling public. A CCTV camera will also be installed during the closure to monitor anti-social behaviour on the north side of the bridge.
Colin Swinney, Service Director for Highways and Waste at Gateshead Council, said: “It is vital that we keep a close eye on the condition of key structures like the Redheugh Bridge.
“Repairs and maintenance work have been scheduled to take place on the same day as the inspection, to minimise the need for closing the bridge, which we know is disruptive for people locally.
“We have a comprehensive programme of inspections planned across the area. Over the coming months we will also be inspecting the A695 Scotswood Bridge, the A695 Blaydon Viaduct as well as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge
“Specialist engineers will complete these inspections to ensure the safety of all these structures.”
During the closure of the Redheugh Bridge, Gateshead Council advises all members of the public to allow extra time for their journeys.
