Staff at the Tyne and Wear Metro, the fire service and police are thanking the public for their patience, after thousands of people were stranded at South Shields after the Great North Run, thanks to the weather.

Torrential rain and thunder storms left roads caused flash flooding, meaning the Metro had to be shut at South Shields, and roads were blocked.

Volunteers and staff worked for hours to make sure people were able to get home safely, but there were huge delays, with some waiting for hours to get back from the coast, and many runners walking long stretches of the way.

The Metro is expected to run on track today, and most roads are now open again around the region.
