Northumbria Police and Crime Commission says that the government's new prison measures will make those involved in the recent riots feel the full force of the law.

It's following the launch of 'Operation Early Dawn' which is an emergency scheme used to ease the prison overcrowding crisis.

Susan Dungworth, Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "It shows the challenges that the Labour governments inherited from years and years of mismanagement and under funding of our prison estate and the wider criminal justice service by the previous administration.

"It's really important that those who participated in the violent disorder we witnessed recently face the full force of the law and they know that their actions will be dealt with appropriate punishment.

"This isn't the first time that we've had to use these measures and there is no doubt it will have some impact on policing, but we have the scheme in place, colleagues within the force and the criminal justice service are well prepared to implement it.

"Our communities want those who've been recently involved in the violence on our streets to feel the full force of the law and realise that they can't bring shame and fear to our streets. The new government is taking important decisions to ensure that that will happen.

"Having the ability to send people to prison is obviously a valuable part of the work that we do to keep our streets safe and to help our communities to feel safe. We know that more than ever at the moment.

"Our message remains clear. We will not tolerate the violence and the hatred that we've seen on our streets recently and we'll stand united as central, regional and local government to tackle that. We will not be intimidated or bullied and neither will our communities."
