The dad of a Ponteland student who drowned in a canal in Manchester told us he's "so grateful" that the city is taking action.

Nick Pope's son Charlie died earlier this month after a night out and ever since, Nick has been campaigning for better water safety around Manchester's canals.

Fire services in Manchester say they will put barriers in place this weekend because of the bad weather.

Nick says it is fantastic news but more still needs to be done to help keep people safe.

"It is wonderful and I am very appreciative but this is just the start," he said.

"We are going to make sure the whole of the city centre where these waterways are going to be made safe."
