Meet our very own PC Beth Guy – who is shooting for glory with Newcastle United Women.

Beth and her Magpies teammates could be crowned FA Women’s National League Division One North champions this weekend if they overcome Barnsley Women.

The 22-year-old spends her days as a police officer keeping the communities of North Tyneside safe, and in her spare time, she puts in an equally winning performance for Becky Langley’s promotion-chasing outfit.

Beth first joined Newcastle United Women (NUW) when she was only 16 back in 2018 after playing for several years at Sunderland AFC Ladies.

Five years later, Blyth-born Beth’s football career continues to go from strength-to-strength – proving herself as a key figure in the Magpies’ midfield this season.

A fortnight ago, she scored a brace in Newcastle’s 6 -1 victory against Bradford City in front of an incredible crowd at St James’ Park – and dedicated her display to her late mam who she sadly lost in February this year.

“My mam is the reason why,” Beth said. “Every Sunday before a game, I go and visit my mam’s grave, speak to her, and on the morning of the match against Bradford, I promised her I’d score – and I kept that promise.

“Every time I step on a football pitch, I feel the release from some of the grief I’ve felt, and I know she’d have wanted me to keep playing.”

And on Sunday (May 1), Beth scored one of the goals which helped NUW secure a 6 – 0 win against Bradford at their penultimate match, leaving only this weekend’s trip to Barnsley to complete the season.

Beth is a full-time police officer for Northumbria Police currently works within Northern Area Command’s Response Policing Team.

No one day is ever the same, with Beth deployed to a wide range of incidents including robberies, burglaries, and domestic violence incidents.

But why did she join policing? She said: “I joined policing because I want to help people and make a difference in our communities. I find it so rewarding – if you’re considering a career in policing I’d encourage anyone to just go for it!”

This weekend, Beth’s colleagues at Northumbria Police will be hoping she’s on target again as NUW target the league title when they head to South Yorkshire to face Barnsley.

Superintendent Kevin Waring said: “Both personally and professionally, I’m so proud of Beth for what she has achieved, especially at such a young age – and I know this is echoed by the entire force.

“Beth is breaking boundaries both within football and policing which have traditionally been viewed as male-dominated spaces. We know that by creating a diverse workforce, we are able to better reflect the communities we serve – and offer this through our policing response.

“Both organisations need people like Beth – and I hope her story acts as inspiration for anyone thinking about entering into a career in policing.

“Beth is an extremely passionate individual which is demonstrated in her successes, and she is such a powerful role-model and advocate for what the Force embodies. I am sure her family are as proud of her as her Northumbria Police family.

“We wish Beth, and her team mates, the best of luck in their next match.”
