A woman has died following a collision in Gateshead – and officers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Shortly after 10pm yesterday (Thursday) officers were alerted to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Old Durham Road near to the junction with Carr Hill Road.

Emergency services attended but a female pedestrian – aged in her 50s - was confirmed as deceased at the scene. Her next of kin have been notified and specialist family liaison officers are offering them support at this tragic time.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody at this time.

Sergeant Steve Armstrong, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department, has now appealed for anybody who witnessed the collision, or who has information that may assist the ongoing investigation, to come forward.

Sgt Armstrong said:

This is a tragic incident that has sadly resulted in a woman’s death. Any death on our roads is a tragedy and our thoughts go out to her family and friends at this time.

We are committed to determining the circumstances surrounding the collision and getting her family the answers they deserve. Our enquiries are ongoing and I would ask that everyone respects the live investigation. We ask that the family’s privacy is respected as they attempt to come to terms with what has happened.

I am asking anybody who was in the area at the time of the collision, or who may have witnessed anything of interest, to get in touch.

We are particularly interested for those in the area to check their dashcam footage and let us know if you see anything regarding the movements of a red vehicle in the area. Your information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove to be a key part of our investigation.”

The road was closed for a number of hours but has since reopened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of the police website or by calling 101 quoting log NP-20211125-0993.
