PM to visit Newcastle with one year to go until Brexit
Theresa May will visit all four corners of the British Isles as the UK marks a year until it leaves the EU
Prime Minister Theresa May will visit Newcastle later, as part of a tour of the United Kingdom to mark exactly one year until Britain leaves the EU.
The PM will also visit Edinburgh, Belfast and South Wales before returning to South London - she'll tell voters in all four parts of the UK that remain or leave, now's the time for setting that aside and making Brexit a success.
Back here in the North East, local leaders say there's still far too much uncertainty when it comes to Brexit, given that it is officially only one year away on March 29, 2019.
The North East overwhelmingly backed Brexit in the referendum in June 2016 - a report revealed earlier this year that our region can expect to be hardest hit by the UK's leaving the EU.
Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah says Brexit has to happen - but that there needs to be a much greater focus on jobs.
She said:
"We want a Brexit which is a success - but that means people's jobs, employment rights, incomes, environment are all protected.
"I know the North East voted by a majority for Brexit, and I respect that result, but for it to be a success there needs to be not a job lost."
