Northumbria Healthcare Lead New Hospital Group

Northumbria Healthcare is leading a radical shake up of the NHS by forming a combined hospital group.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is one of three groups involved in developing a multi-hospital chain – they include Salford and Wigan Foundation Chain and Royal Free London.

They want to improve efficiency across the country and create a ‘foundation group’ widening the support and services it provides to other organisations.

The work will involve Northumbria sharing its clinical knowledge and expertise, and providing corporate services to other sites with things like payroll.

It follows the trust opening its specialist emergency care hospital and the launch of Northumbria Primary Care in June this year.

Jim Mackey is chief executive of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, he said;

“As one of only a few trusts with numerous hospital and community sites, we have vast experience of running services over a vast geographical area, tailoring care to the needs of our local communities and improving health outcomes for our population.”
