Northumbria Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal crash in North Tyneside on Saturday morning (January 11th).

Officers were alerted to an incident taking place on Middle Engine Lane in North Shields at around 11:25am.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found that a grey Peugeot 407 had collided with a white Honda Civic on the road.

Emergency services were called to the area shortly afterwards, with the driver of the Peugeot - a man in his 60s - receiving immediate medical attention.

However, despite the best efforts of the paramedics and ambulance staff called to the area, the man sadly died at the scene.

Currently, enquiries are ongoing as investigators look into how the crash took place; it is currently know that the Peugeot had been travelling southbound when it collided with the Honda which was heading north.

Police have confirmed the man's next of kin have been informed following his death, and his family are being supported by specially trained officers.

They added that the driver of the Honda also stopped at the scene and is currently helping officers with their investigations.

Middle Engine Lane remains closed to the public from the roundabout after the New York bypass, as officers continue to look into their enquiries.

Police are now appealing with anyone with information to come forward by calling 101.
