North East Warned To Spot Signs Of Extremism

Published 7th Sep 2015

Tackling extremism in the North East is everyone's problem and not just a job for the Police.

That's the message from the North East Counter Terrorism Unit .

It's as city centres across the region are to play host to over 50 events this week highlighting the threat of radicalisation and how to report concerns to the police.

Detective Superintendent Mick Hunter urges anyone who thinks somebody is being radicalised to come forward.

He told us "In terms of the online problem, and it is a significant problem, it's the secrecy around what they are looking for online. So I would advise that families and friends are aware particularly for parents know what your children are looking at online and be aware of who they are knocking around with and who they are seeing."

As part of National Prevent Policing Week local police officers will be working with Prevent Engagement Officers to help teach the public how to keep the UK safe from the threat of extremism.

Authorities across the North East will also be promoting the use of the prevent tragedies website for those who have concerns regarding their loved ones and radicalisation.
