Local Election Results - North East
Last updated 6th May 2022
The local election results are in and Kier Starmer will be a happy man when he looks at the North East.
Despite the Tories throwing the kitchen sink at Sunderland Council with visits from the PM and Chancellor recently, it remains Labour.
speaking after Labour retained control of the council, Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq told Sky News: “I am delighted to see the Sunderland result, mostly because speaking to MPs who are connected to Sunderland from the Labour Party … and local activists, the Conservatives have thrown the kitchen sink at it.
“I mean, the Prime Minister was there. When you are in Government you only send the Prime Minister to seats that you think you can overturn and change. So the Prime Minister was there on Bank Holiday Monday and we still held it.”
Boris Johnson and the Chancellor Rishi Sunak both visited Sunderland on the campaign trail.
In Newcastle, the Lib Dems gained a seat and Labour lost one, but with a total of 51 out of 78 Labour has a majority.
There were gains for the Green Party in South Tyneside, which won three seats, giving it a total of six out of 54 - Labour holds 41.
There was no change at North Tyneside Council, with Labour retaining its 51 seats out of 60.The Councils of Newcastle, North Tyneside and South Tyneside all remain Labour too.
Meanwhile on Teesside, a coalition between the Conservatives, Independent Union and other Independents will remain in charge of Hartlepool Council.
It’s after no one party made major gains.
19 seats were needed for a majority, as it stands now the Tories hold 15, Labour 11 and Independents 10.
Independent council leader Shane Moore retained his seat and is likely to remain leader.
That’ll be decided later this month though at the annual general meeting, key roles like leader, deputy leader and ceremonial mayor will be decided.
Back on Tyneside and Gateshead's count took place early this morning (Firday 6th)
The results are in and Labour have held the council.
