There are often planned events taking place at our beaches on Boxing Day and News Year Day, while many swimming fans will head to beaches like Roker, Seaham, Tynemouth and Druridge Bay.
But the RNLI is issuing advice - reminding people the sea temperature in winter is much lower than the rest of the year.
Nick Ayers is a regional water safety lead with the charity;
"Definitely go to an organised festive dip - most commonly they'll have the right safety precautions in place, and the water safety cover.
"Our recommendation, and also the coastguard's recommendation is to check with your doctor before trying cold water swimming or cold water dipping for the first time, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
"Always be prepared - I know it's a common thing to run into the water and only go down in a swimsuit - not wearing a wetsuit.
"Making sure you've got the right warm clothing after your dip, you've got a warm drink,
"And never go alone - so if you can't make one of the organised events, make sure you're going with some buddies to a familiar spot.
