North East - 5th most "hacked" region

Large disparity between how safe we think we are online, and the reality of our situation.

The North East has come fifth in the countries list of “The Most Hacked Regions in England” thanks to new figures from internet security experts McAfee.

The data comes from a survey conducted to better understand the UK’s attitudes towards internet security. It found a large disparity between how safe we think we are online, and the reality of our situation.

Whilst 84.2% of survey respondents in the North East told McAfee they believed their online habits were secure, 30% of them admitted they had either been hacked themselves or knew someone who had been hacked.

Using this data, McAfee revealed a list of the most hacked regions in England, with the North East coming in at 5…

The top 5 most hacked regions in England (Percentages based on people hacked or knowing someone who has been hacked).

  1. Yorkshire - 50% of people hacked 2. South West – 50% of people hacked 3. London - 37% of people hacked 4. Midlands - 34% of people hacked 5. North East – 30.4% of people hacked

To help educate the public on the wide array of dangers present online, McAfee has unveiled a free to access security hub, entitled the “Ultimate Guide to Security Threats”.

A spokesperson from McAfee commented on the data and the launch of the security hub.

“Our survey revealed that there was a disparity between how safe we believe we are online, and the reality of our online situation. 84% of users in the North East believe they are secure online, despite 30% of them having been or knowing someone who has been hacked!”

The security threats hub is designed to help educate people on what to look out for when online and to give them a better understanding of why being safe and secure on the web is so important”.
