A budding North East theatre company are hoping their new show will help highlight the voices which often get overlooked in traditional theatre, as they launch at Alphabetti in Newcastle this week.

SoreSlap Theatre was created in Newcastle, back in 2019, by Papi Jeovani and Rhian Jade.

They are creators, producers and performers who use drama, poetry and physical theatre to explore topics of identity and personal politics.

SoreSlap aims to empower its audience and create a safe space where they can enjoy theatre that makes them stop, laugh, and think.

Now - they are bringing their show More Blacks, More Dogs, More Irish, to Alphabetti - described as;

"In the not-too-distant future, in an unknown land, worlds collide when two people are forced to share a space. Losing their freedom, hope, and dog, they must find a way to be civil or lose all sanity.

"Only when they are given no other option but to be in each other’s presence, do they find that their lives are more similar than they could have ever imagined.

"Though they are trapped, they’re finally free."

Co-founder, and one of the stars - Rhian Jade - tells us why, along with Papi - they wanted to make their voices heard;

"A lot of theatre and art out there right now, doesn't represent people of colour, or people who are non-binary or transgender people, who are constantly adhering to the work rather than have the work adhere to them,

"And we though - in 2022 - more than ever now it's important to hear different voices onstage."

Papi Jeovani tells us what the pair are hoping audiences will take from the show:

"Just have them contemplating what they do every single day and how that may affect someone who isn't as privileged as them - or as welcomed in society as them...

"And what they are doing to help them be more involved."

The show - which runs until December the 3rd - aims to be as inclusive as possible, with a captioned performance on Wednesday 23rd November, Audio described performances on Thursday the 24th and Wednesday the 30th of November, and relaxed shows every Saturday matinee.

As always with Alphabetti Theatre - who are open throughout the week as a warm space, where people can sit or work inside in the warm for free - tickets from 15th-20th of November are pay what you feel, while from the 22nd November onwards the tickets are £15 or less.
