Emerging Newcastle theatre company hope to raise big questions with their new piece
Whale of a Time, from Peachplant Productions, begins this week
A new play - launched by a brand new North East company - is ready to start leading conversations in Newcastle.
Whale of a Time begins at Alphabetti Theatre this week, from Peachplant Productions, which was founded in 2021.
The show explores big issues like generational gaps, friendship and what it means "to be a man".
It was co-written by Peachplant's Lucy Curry and Carl Wylie through lockdown, and is being directed by Paula Penman, who tells us how key the venue has been for bringing new work and chances to up and coming writers, actors and creatives;
"They really champion new writers, new actors, new directors,
"They are really open to offering opportunities to people which is seldom the case.
"Certainly here - the door is open to people who want to try new things."
Lucy Curry gave us some insight into it's creation:
"It is a piece about two men.
"Initially, some people had said, like, 'Why is it about two men? Can it not be two women?'
"And I said no (I love women!) but I was like; 'It has to be two men because we really wanted to look at toxic masculinity and generational differences.'
"There is an overriding theme that is important, and we hope that people will leave and carry on those conversations.
"I really hope that it's going to be a piece that inspires conversations that don't just end when people leave the theatre, they'll sort of carry on into sitting at home on the sofa and having that conversation with their families."
Whale Of A Time launches on Tuesday 17th May and runs until Saturday 4th of June at Alphabetti Theatre.
