Independent police investigation after two people die in Newcastle
An investigation picks up today (Monday 26th July) after two people died following a police pursuit in Newcastle.
Officers say they were alerted to a suspected stolen VW Golf around 8:30am yesterday (Sunday 25th July)
The vehicle failed to stop when instructed by police and made off. A short time later, at about 9am, the Golf was in collision with a Honda on Barrack Road in Newcastle.
Emergency services attended and two male occupants of the Golf were confirmed deceased at the scene. Their next of kin have been notified and are being offered support by specially trained officers.
A third male occupant of the Golf was taken to hospital with serious injuries, along with a female occupant of the Honda.
The road was closed shortly after the incident and is expected to remain shut for a number of hours.
Northumbria Polcie say they have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is a matter of course in incidents of this nature. The IOPC say they will be conducting an independent investigation.
