A Newcastle mum has told Metro Radio she hopes the government do ban legal highs, as her teenage son is addicted to them.

Proposals for a blanket ban have been included in the Queen’s Speech today, which is where Prime Minister David Cameron and ministers set out what laws they want to introduce when in Parliament.

Legal highs can often be plant food that is sold with a warning not for public consumption, which is why it is not illegal.

But Linda, whose name we’ve changed, told us her son was buying them for £1 in the city centre when he was just 15.

She said: “It’s just devastating I wouldn’t believe that it was going to happen to him.

“He’s normally very quiet, polite and willing to help. When he’s had that he’s absolutely horrible.”

She is worried though that a ban won’t work: “I still think these will be circulated, I know it’s going to have massive consequences to those supplying it.

“It’s not going to go away fast.”
