A mum from Newcastle has told Metro that more needs to be done to prevent teenagers from taking up smoking.

Barbara Tulloch from Walker started smoking when she was 14 and is warning youngsters away from the habit.

The most recent figures found that 1 in 4 children between 11 and 15 in the North East has tried smoking.

The latest statistics about the extent of15-year-olds smoking habits are expected later today.

Barbara says parents have an important role to play in stopping their children getting addicted.

She said: "I say to my kids well you've seen the strugglest that I've had and I don't want you to have to go through that yourself.

"I'm speaking from experience when I tell you it's really really hard to give up."
