Newcastle group warn of rise in attacks against North East Muslims

Published 16th Dec 2015

Muslim women are being attacked on North East streets, and families have even been spat on.

That's what we're hearing from a local organisation which says there has been a backlash on innocent people since the Paris terror attacks.

Abu Tayeb is from the Islamic Diversity Centre in Newcastle.

"By the Monday after the Friday night and the Paris shootings, I was dealing with about five separate incidents of Muslims who were physically attacked. Either in schools, on the streets and this was in the North East. It's usually Muslim women who are attacked, these are physical attacks that are taking place."

An event is being held today (Thursday 17th December) which aims to tackle stereotypes and talk about how terrorism is affecting communities.

IDC say the event is an open discussion on Terrorism, its types and effects on our Communities. The event will take place at St James Park in Newcastle at 6pm. The event aims to show the many faces of terrorism, inform attendees on the backlash on local & national Muslims and give the local perspective on the matter.

A panel of scholars, academics and speakers will take part in discussions.

The group are urging local people from all faiths and backgrounds to attend.
