Newcastle's First Glow-Path Good or Bad?

Special UV Paint could replace street lamps!

Newcastle's become the first city in the North East to install a path that lights up in the dark.

This alternative to pricey street lighting sees a glow in dark UV paint sprayed to the ground on the path that links the Central Motorway A167 to Kingsway, in Fenham.

Residents in the area had asked the council to install street lights but were instead told that this glow in the dark path would be a cheaper option.

The path has received mixed reactions from locals.

Most are happy, but some would have prefered street lamps....or even both. To be honest (see the pic) we're not conviced.

Labour Councillor Anita Lower is not convinced by the new initiative,

“If it just basically lights the path up it’s great but it doesn’t solve community safety issues for residents if that is the problem, or replace street lighting.

I think the thing we would really like to know about it if it works is whether it’s permanent or if it needs to be replaced,”
