Newcastle Airport cracksdown on drunken passengers

Newcastle Airport sign up to the new Transport Minister's plans to reduce disruption by drunk and disorderly passengers

As many of us here in the North East jet off on our holiday this summer the thought of bargain booze in duty free is appealing, but be warned, the new Transport Minister is proposing plans to review the sale of alcohol in airports.

It could see the introduction of sealed bags from duty free to try and stop passengers from drinking large amounts of alcohol before boarding their flight.

It's after a spate of incidents on planes in the UK involving drunk and disorderly holiday makers.

Last Summer a plane travelling from Newcastle to turkey was forced to divert after a drunk women allegedly kicked and punched the doors and windows mid-flight and just a few months back a man was escorted off a Thomas Cook flight at Newcastle Airport for being drunk and disorderly.

Graham Mason is Planning and Affairs director at Newcastle Airport, he told us he welcomes the plans but insists the airport doesn't want to spoil people's fun:

"We want people to enjoy their holiday and want them to have a good experience and enjoy their time in the airport but just be considerate of other passengers and behave responsibly. Newcastle airport is signed up to the UK aviation code of practice, we believe that that will allow us to manage the situation. Thankfully incidents of this nature are rare."
